On June 4th, Daniele Antichi and our NNO for Italy, Lorenzo Tramacere, were among the organizers of “Agroecologia al Centro,” the annual event of the Center for Agri-Environmental Research “Enrico Avanzi” (Ciraa) of the Università di Pisa and Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna. This event delved into agroecology.
Now in its 7th edition, this event is open to everyone and provides an opportunity to engage with our researchers and visit the fields where they conduct their experiments.
This year, the event focused on Functional Biodiversity in Agroecosystems, offering three specific tracks to reflect on the role of diversification in agriculture:
- at the genetic level
- at the crop level
- at the landscape level
This event served as a Demonstration Event for Oper8, exploring the role of intraspecific wheat mixtures, the selection of wheat varieties with high rusticity that can compete better with weeds, and the inter cropping of wheat with legumes.
All these agroecological practices are gaining traction to improve the sustainability of agricultural systems by reducing reliance on external inputs like herbicides.
